WASHINGTON, DC – Democracy International applauds the U.S. Senate’s confirmation today of Ambassador Mark Green as Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Ambassador Green is deeply qualified for the position, having served previously as U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania, as a Member of Congress representing Wisconsin's eighth congressional district, and, most recently, as the President of the International Republican Institute.

"Ambassador Green's background speaks for itself," said DI President Eric Bjornlund. "He is an accomplished diplomat, politician, and development professional who brings to USAID a genuine commitment to democracy, human rights, and good governance and an understanding of how foreign assistance, effectively and efficiently implemented, can further the long-term prosperity of both recipient and donor countries. Democracy International wholeheartedly welcomes his appointment and looks forward to his leadership."

Ambassador Green enjoyed broad bipartisan support throughout his confirmation process and the U.S. Senate confirmed him unanimously. As USAID Administrator, Ambassador Green will lead the U.S. Government agency tasked with eradicating extreme poverty and promoting democracy, human rights, and good governance in furtherance of broad U.S. national interests. Democracy International has partnered with USAID for nearly 15 years.
