During the webinar, the Business Partnership Against Tuberculosis will be presented and a brief overview about simple and effective TB prevention methods will be given.

The U.S.-Ukraine Business Council (USUBC), www.usubc.org, and its members call for business partnership in fighting tuberculosis in Ukraine. We propose to create partnerships in order to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, and to mitigate their consequences.

WHY IS THIS WEBINAR IMPORTANT FOR BUSINESSES OPERATING IN UKRAINE

Due to the COVID-19 pandemia, saving lives and improving health of the population has become the priority for the leaders of nations and business worldwide. A nation is safer and stronger when people can live healthy and productive lives, when nations around the world are able to prevent and withstand crises.

The attitude to combating infectious diseases has dramatically changed in 2020. People have realized that the world could face emerging threats because of various infectious diseases. In our increasingly interconnected society, a health threat anywhere is a threat everywhere.

For many years the U.S.A. has played a leadership role in preventing and responding to infectious disease outbreaks. For over 50 years, USAID’s global programs have saved lives, protected people from most vulnerable diseases and promoted stability of communities and nations. USAID’s 2019-2024 Country Development Coordination Strategy for Ukraine calls for a specific focus on improving healthcare systems in Ukraine. For example, Deloitte Ukraine, a USUBC member, is a participant of the USAID Health Reform Support program and PACT Ukraine implements a USAID-funded project aimed at fighting tuberculosis (TB) in Ukraine (https://www.pactworld.org/country/ukraine).

Unfortunately, weakening of the immune system of the population could result in new emerging threats; the worsening of the situation with TB in Ukraine ca serve as an example of this. The situation with TB in Ukraine is threatening, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) (see Ukraine TB profile from WHO

Among patients and victims of COVID-19, there are representatives of very different social groups – the rich and the poor. The reality is that TB, as well as other dangerous infectious diseases, could really threaten not only marginalized and vulnerable people, but the personnel of your company.

According to WHO, people with COVID-19 and TB show similar symptoms such as cough, fever and having difficulty breathing. Both diseases attack primarily the lungs and although both biological agents transmit mainly via close contact, the incubation period from exposure to disease in TB is longer, often with a slow onset. It is anticipated that people with both TB and COVID-19 may have poorer treatment outcomes, especially if TB treatment is interrupted (https://www.who.int/tb/COVID_19considerations_tuberculosis_services.pdf).
