WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy (UKMA), Kyiv, Ukraine was founded in 1615, and after centuries of suppression, it was re-established in 1992.  Since that time, the University has been guided by the vision of educating a new generation of leaders based on academic freedom and the highest international standards of academic excellence, with emphasis on rule of law, ethical standards and service to build a democratic civil society.

UKMA has been Ukraine’s leading proponent of university autonomy and academic freedom, elements which are at the central core of civil society, innovation and the a robust competitive economy.

UKMA was the first university in Ukraine to introduce programs that meet international standards. Due to Ukraine’s information isolation, with the initiative and funding of Kyiv Mohyla Foundation of America and USAID, the university established the nation-wide Electronic Library of Ukraine Project (ELibUkr – www.elibukr.org) to provide access to global electronic information to Ukraine’s universities.

ELibUkr now offers the country’s widest array of electronic paid and free data bases and research information resources to ten major national universities through a central portal.

The government of Ukraine recently supported the project and committed to fund three major global data bases and expand the project to Ukraine’s eighty five institutions of higher learning. UKMA’s Library system is open to visitors from the public, which is a significant innovation in the country’s academic and research libraries. UKMA’s campus also includes the American Library, which offers books, journals, films, business and economic information about the United States.

Courses and programs are conducted in both Ukrainian and English, and the study of other languages and literature is offered in various departments. Among the university’s many innovations, the following are of national significance: the first School of Public Health in the country, the first western curriculum PhD program with current recognition and collaboration in three major international universities, the first Master’s programs in various areas of study.

A major accomplishment includes the Kyiv Mohyla J-School, with emphasis on electronic media, radio and television, which is considered Ukraine’s top school of journalism. UKMA also established the country’s first Department for the Study of the European Union and was awarded the highly competitive Jean Monnet grant to develop courses for a better understanding of European issues and integration.

The university includes the internationally recognized Institute of Sociology and Institute of Political Analysis and it is the home of one of Ukraine’s leading schools of law, business and economics. With its own publishing house, the university publishes a wide array of books in various languages.

In August 2010, the Kyiv Post featured an article on the university titled, “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Stands Out as One of Nation’s Best”. The university received top ratings by the country’s employers and organizations. In spite of monumental difficulties, the University became a premier educational institution and gained international recognition.

Alumni of KMBS established the country’s first university Alumni Association, and they support their alma mater. Many have become leaders in the government, business, academic and civic communities.
