To mark the 20th anniversary of the Fulbright program in Ukraine, Kiev hosted an international conference on national higher education. Its goal was to explore the past, understand the present and plan the future of higher education in Ukraine through the lens of education development trends in European and post-Soviet countries.

As part of the conference “Higher Education in Ukraine: Internationalization, Reform, Innovation” SCM presented Skills Passport, its key education project implemented under SCM social programme Contemporary Education.

“As the biggest employer we are concerned that the quality of education in Ukraine should meet the demands of the labour market. Unfortunately, today the levels of training of graduates does not satisfy employers, and this is the general trend across the country. Business has to train and retrain graduates. But I’m confident that we have everything we need to change the situation together. Our Skills Passport project is the beginning of consistent partnership of SCM as a representative of the labour market and education system. It is the opening of a dialogue between a student’s first job and his Alma Mater,” notedSCM Director of Public Relations and Communications Natalia Yemchenko.

Other participants of the broad discussion on the future and profile of higher education in Ukraine included teachers, scientists, representatives of international educational organisations, heads of international scientific exchange programmes and university executives, leading specialists in higher education and experts assessing the quality of education in Ukraine, the USA, Europe and post-Soviet countries. Among the speakers were the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John F. Tefft, First Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine Yevgeny Sulima, Vice Chair of the Board of Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board Susan Ness and Senior Counselor of Institute of International Education (USA) Mary Kirk.
