WASHINGTON, D.C. - The first annual international forum on "The Economic Development of Ukraine" will be held at the Knight Conference Center in the internationally acclaimed Newseum, 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, October 15, 2009. The theme of the first Forum will be, "The Impact of the Global Liquidity Crisis on Ukraine and the Road to Economic Recovery."
Major speakers in Washington, D.C. at the international Forum will include Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Hrygoriy Nemyria, Minister of Economy Bohdan Danylyshyn, high level US government officials, top executives from the international lending institutions and economic experts on Ukraine.
Major speakers participating from Kyiv, via Live TV Link, will be Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, top economic experts, and executives from the IMF, World Bank, EBRD and other financial institutions.
OBJECTIVES OF THE FORUM:
To bring together international and Ukrainian experts to present and discuss:
[1] The reasons why the international liquidity crisis affected Ukraine more than most other emerging economies.
[2] Ukraine’s main vulnerabilities to the financial crisis.
[3] Why the local currency depreciated more than the currencies of other countries.
[4] Why the real sector, including exports and GDP, declined so dramatically.
[5] What measures already adopted by Ukrainian authorities to deal with the crisis were adequate and what measures were inadequate.
[6] Measures that the country could undertake to recover from the crisis.
[7] Measures that the country should undertake in the medium term to accelerate economic development, given that past sources of economic growth
(domestic consumption and exports) are not likely to maintain the growth dynamics of the past.
